SLC6A1-AS1

Description

The SLC6A1-AS1 (SLC6A1 antisense RNA 1) is a ncRNA gene located on chromosome 3.

SLC6A1-AS1 is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is located in the antisense direction to the SLC6A1 gene. It is transcribed from the opposite strand of DNA, but does not encode for a protein. The function of SLC6A1-AS1 is unknown, however it has been suggested that it may play a role in regulating the expression of its neighboring gene, SLC6A1. SLC6A1 encodes the serotonin transporter protein, which is responsible for the reuptake of serotonin in the brain. Dysregulation of SLC6A1 has been implicated in a number of neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
