SLC25A23

Description

The SLC25A23 (solute carrier family 25 member 23) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

SLC25A23 is an electroneutral antiporter that mediates the transport of adenine nucleotides across the inner mitochondrial membrane. It was originally identified as an ATP-magnesium/inorganic phosphate antiporter, but it also acts as a broad-specificity adenyl nucleotide antiporter. SLC25A23 regulates the mitochondrial matrix adenine nucleotide pool, allowing cells to adapt to changing energy demands and indirectly regulate adenine nucleotide-dependent metabolic pathways. It also acts as a regulator of mitochondrial calcium uptake and can transport trace amounts of other divalent metal cations in complex with ATP. In vitro studies show that SLC25A23 exhibits low activity with guanyl and pyrimidine nucleotides.

SLC25A23 is also known as APC2, MCSC2, SCAMC3, SCaMC-3.
