SLC22A13

Description

The SLC22A13 (solute carrier family 22 member 13) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

SLC22A13, also known as Organic anion transporter 10 or Organic cation transporter-like 3, is a protein that transports small molecules across cell membranes. It is involved in the uptake of urate by the kidneys and intestines and may also transport other molecules like orotate and nicotinate. This protein is a member of the organic-cation transporter family and functions as a transmembrane protein.

SLC22A13 is an anion antiporter that facilitates the exchange of urate, orotate, and nicotinate for organic or inorganic anions. It transports urate and orotate across the apical membrane of proximal tubule epithelial cells, playing a role in urate reabsorption by the kidneys. SLC22A13 may also participate in orotate reabsorption by the kidneys and nicotinate reabsorption by the intestines. Urate uptake occurs through an exchange mechanism with organic anions like (S)-lactate, succinate, glutathione, and nicotinate. The transport of urate and orotate is dependent on chloride ions. SLC22A13 exhibits similar transport properties to the urate/orotate renal antiporter SLC22A12/URAT1 and may act as a substitute for SLC22A12/URAT1 in specific situations.

SLC22A13 is also known as OAT10, OCTL1, OCTL3, ORCTL-3, ORCTL3.
