Description
The SCD5 (stearoyl-CoA desaturase 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.
SCD5 is a stearoyl-CoA desaturase that catalyzes the insertion of a cis double bond at the delta-9 position into fatty acyl-CoA substrates, including palmitoyl-CoA and stearoyl-CoA. This process utilizes oxygen (O2) and electrons from reduced cytochrome b5. The enzyme generates a mixture of 16:1 and 18:1 unsaturated fatty acids. SCD5 plays a role in neuronal cell proliferation and differentiation by downregulating the EGFR/AKT/MAPK and Wnt signaling pathways.
