RPS9


Description

The RPS9 (ribosomal protein S9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

RPS9, the gene encoding 40S ribosomal protein S9, is involved in protein synthesis. This protein is a component of the small 40S ribosomal subunit, which, together with the large 60S subunit, forms the ribosome. RPS9 belongs to the S4P family of ribosomal proteins. Its expression levels vary in colorectal cancers compared to normal tissues, but no correlation has been found between expression levels and disease severity. Multiple processed pseudogenes derived from RPS9 are distributed throughout the genome.

RPS9 is a component of the small ribosomal subunit, which is responsible for protein synthesis in the cell. RPS9 is part of the small subunit (SSU) processome, the initial precursor of the small eukaryotic ribosomal subunit. During the assembly of the SSU processome in the nucleolus, various ribosome biogenesis factors, an RNA chaperone, and ribosomal proteins associate with the nascent pre-rRNA. These factors work together to facilitate RNA folding, modifications, rearrangements, and cleavage, as well as targeted degradation of pre-ribosomal RNA by the RNA exosome.
