RPL8

Description

The RPL8 (ribosomal protein L8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

The RPL8 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is a component of the 60S subunit of the ribosome, the organelle responsible for protein synthesis. Ribosomes are composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, each containing RNA and multiple proteins. This protein belongs to the L2P family of ribosomal proteins and is located in the cytoplasm. In rats, it associates with the 5.8S rRNA, likely participates in aminoacyl-tRNA binding, and is part of the elongation factor 2-binding site at the ribosomal subunit interface. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome, a characteristic of genes encoding ribosomal proteins. Alternative splicing of the RPL8 gene can generate transcript variants encoding the same protein.

RPL8 is also known as L8, uL2.
