RPL22


Description

The RPL22 (ribosomal protein L22) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

The human RPL22 gene, located on chromosome 1, encodes the 60S ribosomal protein L22, a component of the large ribosomal subunit (60S) that is essential for protein synthesis. Ribosomes, the cellular machinery for protein synthesis, are composed of two subunits: a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. The 60S subunit is responsible for catalyzing the formation of peptide bonds, linking amino acids together to form proteins. RPL22 belongs to the L22E family of ribosomal proteins and is involved in the specific binding of Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNA (EBER) 1. The mouse homolog of RPL22 has been shown to bind to heparin. There are multiple processed pseudogenes of RPL22 dispersed throughout the human genome.

Component of the large ribosomal subunit. The ribosome is a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for the synthesis of proteins in the cell.

RPL22 is also known as EAP, HBP15, HBP15/L22, L22, eL22.
