RCC1

Description

The RCC1 (regulator of chromosome condensation 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

RCC1, also known as Regulator of chromosome condensation 1, Ran guanine nucleotide exchange factor, and RanGEF, is a human gene and protein. RCC1 functions as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Ran GTPase. RCC1 interacts with RANBP3 and Ran.

RCC1 is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) that promotes the exchange of GDP for GTP on the Ran GTPase. This activity is critical for Ran-mediated functions, including nuclear import and mitosis. RCC1 contributes to the generation of high levels of chromosome-associated GTP-bound Ran, which is important for mitotic spindle assembly and proper progression through mitosis. By maintaining high levels of GTP-bound Ran in the nucleus, RCC1 facilitates the release of cargo proteins from importins after nuclear import. RCC1 also plays a role in regulating the onset of chromosome condensation during the S phase of the cell cycle. It interacts with both nucleosomes and double-stranded DNA.

RCC1 is also known as CHC1, RCC1-I.
