Description

The PRTN3 (proteinase 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

Proteinase 3 (PRTN3) is an enzyme that is produced by a gene in humans called PRTN3. It is a type of serine protease that is mainly found in neutrophils, which are a type of white blood cell. While its exact role in neutrophils is not fully understood, it is known to contribute to the production of antimicrobial peptides that help fight infections. PRTN3 is also a target for a type of antibody called anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) of the c-ANCA (cytoplasmic subtype) class. These antibodies are often found in people with a disease called granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

Proteinase 3 (PRTN3) is a serine protease that can break down several proteins, including elastin, fibronectin, laminin, vitronectin, and collagen types I, III, and IV. This activity has been observed in laboratory settings (in vitro). PRTN3 also helps to strengthen the barrier between blood vessels during the migration of neutrophils by activating a receptor called F2RL1/PAR-2. This suggests that PRTN3 plays a role in the movement of neutrophils through blood vessels, possibly when it interacts with a molecule called CD177.
