Description
The ZBTB16 (zinc finger and BTB domain containing 16) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.
ZBTB16 is a gene that encodes a zinc finger transcription factor containing nine Kruppel-type zinc finger domains. It is located in the nucleus, plays a role in cell cycle progression, and interacts with a histone deacetylase. Aberrant gene rearrangement at this locus is linked to acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). ZBTB16 has also been implicated in the function of mouse Natural Killer T cells and gamma-delta T cells. Alternative splicing generates multiple protein isoforms.
ZBTB16 acts as a transcriptional repressor, potentially by recruiting histone deacetylases to target promoters. It may play a role in myeloid maturation and the development or maintenance of other differentiated tissues. ZBTB16 is a likely substrate-recognition component of an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase complex, mediating the ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of target proteins.
