Description

The transient receptor potential melastatin 1 (TRPM1) gene encodes a calcium-permeable ion channel primarily expressed in the retina and the brain. It plays a crucial role in light perception and other sensory processes, including pain and taste. TRPM1 is activated by a variety of stimuli, including light, heat, and certain chemicals, leading to the influx of calcium ions into cells. This influx triggers downstream signaling pathways that contribute to the perception of these stimuli. Mutations in the TRPM1 gene have been linked to various human diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa, a leading cause of blindness.
