TRIT1

Description

The TRIT1 (tRNA isopentenyltransferase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

TRIT1 is a gene that encodes an enzyme called tRNA isopentenyltransferase, mitochondrial. This enzyme is responsible for adding an isopentenyl group from dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) onto adenosine residue 37 of specific tRNA molecules.

TRIT1 catalyzes the transfer of a dimethylallyl group from dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) to the adenine at position 37 of both cytosolic and mitochondrial tRNAs, resulting in the formation of N6-(dimethylallyl)adenosine (i6A37). This modification is specific to a limited set of tRNAs, including tRNA(Ser)(AGA), tRNA(Ser)(CGA), tRNA(Ser)(UGA), and partially modifies the selenocysteine tRNA(Ser)(UCA). TRIT1's role in modifying these tRNAs is crucial for selenoprotein expression.

TRIT1 is also known as COXPD35, GRO1, IPPT, IPT, IPTase, MOD5, hGRO1.
