SERPINB6
Description
The SERPINB6 (serpin family B member 6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.
Serpin B6 is a protein produced in humans by the SERPINB6 gene.
Serpin B6 plays a role in regulating serine proteinases in the brain and those that escape from the bloodstream. It inhibits the activity of cathepsin G, kallikrein-8, and thrombin. This protein is crucial in the inner ear, protecting against leakage of lysosomal contents during stressful conditions. The loss of this protective function leads to cell death and sensorineural hearing loss.
SERPINB6 is also known as CAP, DFNB91, MSTP057, PI-6, PI6, PTI, SPI3.
