RTN4IP1 plays a crucial role in regulating the growth of nerve fibers (neurites) from retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), which are essential for the development of the inner retina and the optic nerve. However, it also acts as a strong inhibitor of nerve regeneration after spinal cord injury.

RTN4IP1 is also known as NIMP, OPA10.
