Description
The NDST1 (N-deacetylase and N-sulfotransferase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.
Bifunctional heparan sulfate N-deacetylase/N-sulfotransferase 1 is an enzyme. In humans, it is encoded by the NDST1 gene.
[Isoform 1]: A crucial enzyme with dual functions, catalyzing both N-deacetylation and N-sulfation of glucosamine (GlcNAc) within the glycosaminoglycan of heparan sulfate. It modifies the repeating sugar backbone of GlcNAc-GlcA to produce N-sulfated heparosan, an essential precursor for subsequent modifications in heparin biosynthesis. This enzyme plays a critical role in regulating the extent and pattern of sulfation in heparan sulfate. It contributes to the synthesis of heparan sulfate, which ultimately serves as a ligand for L-selectin, thus participating in inflammatory responses. NDST1 isoform 1 is necessary for the release of SDCBP, CD63, and syndecan via exosomes.
