MYF5

Description

The MYF5 (myogenic factor 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

MYF5 is a protein essential for the development of skeletal muscle. It belongs to a family of proteins called myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs) that play a sequential role in muscle differentiation. MYF5 is the earliest MRF expressed in the embryo, active for a short period around 8 to 14 days post-somite formation in mice. During this time, it commits myogenic precursor cells to become skeletal muscle, acting as a determination factor for muscle development. MYF5's expression in proliferating myoblasts further highlights its role in muscle development. Importantly, MYF5 can induce muscle development when expressed in fibroblast cells, demonstrating its powerful regulatory function. MYF5 is expressed in the dermomyotome of the early somites, promoting the differentiation of myogenic precursors into myoblasts.

MYF5 is also known as EORVA, bHLHc2.
