MSMO1
Description
The MSMO1 (methylsterol monooxygenase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.
MSMO1 is a protein involved in human cholesterol biosynthesis. It is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane and is similar to the yeast ERG25 protein. MSMO1 contains metal binding motifs and is thought to function in cholesterol biosynthesis through its role in the demethylation of specific sterol precursors. Alternative splicing of the MSMO1 gene can result in different isoforms.
MSMO1 catalyzes a three-step monooxygenation reaction to remove methyl groups from 4,4-dimethyl and 4alpha-methylsterols. This process allows these sterols to be converted into cholesterol. MSMO1 also plays a role in drug metabolism by converting eldecalcitol, a vitamin D analog, into 1alpha,2beta,25-trihydroxy vitamin D3 through hydroxylation and O-dehydroxypropylation.
MSMO1 is also known as DESP4, ERG25, MCCPD, SC4MOL.
