GUF1

Description

The GUF1 (GTP binding elongation factor GUF1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.

GUF1, encoded by the GUF1 gene, is a protein found in human mitochondria. It is the mitochondrial counterpart of elongation factor 4.

GUF1 plays a crucial role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. It acts as a 'quality control' mechanism, ensuring accurate translation by enabling the back-translocation of tRNAs on ribosomes that have made errors. This process involves moving the tRNA back by one codon, allowing for correction. GUF1's interaction with mitochondrial ribosomes is dependent on the presence of GTP (guanosine triphosphate).

GUF1 is also known as DEE40, EF-4, EF4, EIEE40.
