Description

The GLDN (gliomedin) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

GLDN (Gliomedin) is a protein that serves as a ligand for NRCAM and NFASC/neurofascin, crucial for the formation and maintenance of the nodes of Ranvier on myelinated axons. It facilitates interactions between Schwann cell microvilli and axons through its binding to NRCAM and NFASC. These nodes contain concentrated sodium channels, essential for the rapid propagation of nerve impulses along myelinated axons. GLDN is involved in the formation of these nodes during development, where two heminodes fuse together. While not required for the formation of mature nodes with normal sodium channel clusters, it plays a crucial role in the proper clustering of sodium channels at heminodes. Furthermore, GLDN, alongside NRCAM, ensures the stability of NFASC and sodium channel clusters at mature nodes of Ranvier.
