GGPS1
Description
The GGPS1 gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase 1. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the synthesis of cholesterol, a vital component of cell membranes and precursor to steroid hormones. GGPS1 is highly expressed in the liver, the primary site of cholesterol production. It catalyzes the final step in the synthesis of geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP), a key intermediate in the cholesterol synthesis pathway. Mutations in the GGPS1 gene can lead to various health problems, impacting cholesterol levels, immune function, and overall health.
