GFM2
Description
The GFM2 (GTP dependent ribosome recycling factor mitochondrial 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.
GFM2 is a gene that encodes a protein called Ribosome-releasing factor 2, mitochondrial. Unlike its homolog GFM1, GFM2 acts as a Ribosome Recycling Factor, playing a role in the termination of protein synthesis within mitochondria.
GFM2, also known as Ribosome-releasing factor 2, mitochondrial (RRF2mt), is a mitochondrial GTPase that plays a crucial role in the termination of mitochondrial protein synthesis. It works in collaboration with MRRF to disassemble ribosomes from messenger RNA, promoting ribosome recycling. This disassembly process involves the dissolution of intersubunit contacts, and GTP hydrolysis occurs after ribosome disassembly, likely on the large ribosomal subunit. Notably, GFM2 does not participate in the GTP-dependent ribosomal translocation step during the elongation phase of translation.
