FSHR

Description

The FSHR gene, located on chromosome 2, provides instructions for making the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR). This protein resides on the surface of cells in the ovaries and testes, playing a crucial role in regulating the development and maturation of eggs in females and sperm in males. FSHR binds to follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. This interaction triggers a signaling cascade within the cells, ultimately leading to the production of estradiol (a female sex hormone) and the growth of follicles containing eggs in females. In males, FSH promotes the production of sperm.

Associated Diseases

Did you know?

Mutations in the FSHR gene can lead to a condition called 'FSH resistance' where the body's cells are less responsive to FSH, potentially affecting fertility.
