DHODH : dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (quinone)

Description

The DHODH (dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (quinone)) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

The DHODH gene provides instructions for producing the enzyme dihydroorotate dehydrogenase. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the production of pyrimidines, essential building blocks for DNA, RNA, and energy-carrying molecules like ATP and GTP within cells. Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase functions within mitochondria, the energy-producing centers of cells, where it converts dihydroorotate to orotic acid. Further modifications to orotic acid by other enzymes produce pyrimidines.

DHODH is also known as DHOdehase, POADS, URA1.
