DCT, also known as L-dopachrome tautomerase (DT), plays a key role in melanin biosynthesis by catalyzing the conversion of L-dopachrome into 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA).

DCT is also known as OCA8, TRP-2, TYRP2.
