Description
The ATP2A1 (ATPase sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ transporting 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.
The ATP2A1 gene provides instructions for creating an enzyme called SERCA1. This enzyme plays a crucial role in muscle function, regulating the levels of calcium within muscle cells. SERCA1 is found in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, a structure that stores and releases calcium ions. When calcium is moved out of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, muscles contract, and when calcium is moved back in, muscles relax. SERCA1 is responsible for transporting calcium ions from the cell into the sarcoplasmic reticulum, triggering muscle relaxation.
