ATOH7

Description

The ATOH7 (atonal bHLH transcription factor 7) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.

ATOH7 is a transcription factor that binds to DNA at the consensus sequence 5'-CAG[GC]TG-3'. It may dimerize with TCF3 isoform E47 for DNA binding in certain situations. ATOH7 regulates the expression of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) determinant genes by binding to their promoters and enhancers. ATOH7 plays a role in RGC determination and survival, photoreceptor population development, targeting of RGC axons to the optic nerve, and development of the retino-hypothalamic tract. ATOH7 can autoregulate its own transcription by binding to its promoter and enhancer sequences. It is also required for retinal circadian rhythm photoentrainment and contributes to brainstem auditory signaling and binaural processing.

ATOH7 is also known as Math5, NCRNA, PHPVAR, RNANC, bHLHa13.
