ATAD1

Description

The ATAD1 (ATPase family AAA domain containing 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.

ATAD1 is an outer mitochondrial translocase that removes mislocalized tail-anchored transmembrane proteins from the mitochondrial outer membrane. It recognizes and binds these proteins and uses ATP to extract them from the membrane. ATAD1 also plays a crucial role in regulating the surface expression of AMPA receptors (AMPARs), which are involved in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. It is required for NMDA-stimulated AMPAR internalization and inhibits the recycling of GRIA1 and GRIA2 back to the plasma membrane, processes that rely on ATPase activity.

ATAD1 is also known as AFDC1, FNP001, HKPX4, Msp1, THORASE, hATAD1.
