AP3B2 gene encodes for AP-3 complex subunit beta-2, a protein involved in protein sorting within the late-Golgi/trans-Golgi network (TGN) and/or endosomes. AP-3 complexes mediate the recruitment of clathrin to membranes and recognize sorting signals in transmembrane cargo molecules.
AP3B2, also known as Adaptor protein complex AP-3 subunit beta-2, is a component of the non-clathrin and clathrin-associated adaptor protein complex 3 (AP-3). This complex plays a crucial role in sorting proteins within the late-Golgi/trans-Golgi network (TGN) and/or endosomes. AP-3 contributes to the recruitment of clathrin to membranes and recognizes sorting signals in transmembrane cargo molecules. It is specifically involved in sorting a group of transmembrane proteins destined for lysosomes and related organelles. Working together with the BLOC-1 complex, AP-3 directs cargo into vesicles formed at cell bodies, enabling their transport to neurites and nerve terminals.
