ANKLE2
Description
The ANKLE2 (ankyrin repeat and LEM domain containing 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.
ANKLE2 plays a crucial role in the reassembly of the nuclear envelope during cell division (mitosis). It achieves this by promoting the removal of phosphate groups (dephosphorylation) from the protein BAF/BANF1. This process is essential for the completion of mitosis and the formation of a new nucleus. ANKLE2 controls the dephosphorylation of BAF/BANF1 by inhibiting the activity of the VRK1 kinase and by promoting the action of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) on BAF/BANF1. In addition, ANKLE2 may regulate the location of VRK1 within cells that are not dividing, keeping it within the nucleus. While ANKLE2's specific role in the function of PP2A is not entirely clear, it may act as a regulatory component of this complex or facilitate its association with other proteins. ANKLE2 is also involved in the development of the brain.
