PREB

Description

The PREB (prolactin regulatory element binding) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

Prolactin regulatory element-binding protein (PREB) is a protein encoded by the PREB gene in humans. It binds to a specific element in the prolactin (PRL) promoter, potentially acting as a transcriptional regulator. PREB's involvement in developmental abnormalities associated with partial trisomy 2p suggests a broader role in development. The PREB gene overlaps with the ABHD1 gene on the opposite strand.

This protein acts as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) that specifically activates the small GTPase SAR1B. It plays a crucial role in the recruitment of SAR1B and other COPII coat components to endoplasmic reticulum membranes, which is essential for the formation of COPII transport vesicles from the ER.

PREB is also known as SEC12.
