PRDX4

Description

The PRDX4 (peroxiredoxin 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome X.

PRDX4 is a protein encoded by the PRDX4 gene in humans. It belongs to the peroxiredoxin family of antioxidant enzymes and is located in the cytoplasm. Peroxidases within the peroxiredoxin family utilize reducing equivalents from thiol-containing donor molecules to reduce hydrogen peroxide and alkyl hydroperoxides to water and alcohol. PRDX4 has been shown to play a regulatory role in the activation of the transcription factor NF-kappaB. PRDX4 interacts with Peroxiredoxin 1.

PRDX4 is a thiol-specific peroxidase that catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides to water and alcohols. This function protects cells from oxidative stress by detoxifying peroxides and acting as a sensor of hydrogen peroxide-mediated signaling events. PRDX4 also regulates the activation of NF-kappa-B in the cytosol by modulating I-kappa-B-alpha phosphorylation.

PRDX4 is also known as AOE37-2, AOE372, HEL-S-97n, PRX-4.
