POLR2K
Description
The POLR2K (RNA polymerase II, I and III subunit K) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.
The POLR2K gene encodes one of the smallest subunits of RNA polymerase II, the polymerase responsible for synthesizing messenger RNA in eukaryotes. This subunit is shared by the other two DNA-directed RNA polymerases.
The POLR2K gene encodes a protein that is a component of all three DNA-directed RNA polymerases (RNA polymerases I, II, and III), which are responsible for transcribing DNA into RNA. These polymerases use four ribonucleoside triphosphates as substrates. RNA polymerase I synthesizes ribosomal RNA precursors, RNA polymerase II synthesizes messenger RNA precursors and many functional non-coding RNAs, and RNA polymerase III synthesizes small RNAs, such as 5S rRNA and tRNAs.
POLR2K is also known as ABC10-alpha, RPABC4, RPB10alpha, RPB12, RPB7.0, hRPB7.0, hsRPB10a.
