POLR2I

Description

The POLR2I (RNA polymerase II subunit I) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

The POLR2I gene encodes a subunit of RNA polymerase II, the enzyme responsible for synthesizing messenger RNA (mRNA) in eukaryotic cells. This subunit, along with two other polymerase subunits, forms the DNA binding domain of the polymerase, a groove where the DNA template is transcribed into RNA. The protein product of POLR2I has two zinc finger motifs with conserved cysteines, indicating its zinc binding activity.

POLR2I/RPB9 is a core component of RNA polymerase II (Pol II), a DNA-dependent RNA polymerase responsible for synthesizing mRNA precursors and various functional non-coding RNAs using ribonucleoside triphosphates as substrates. Pol II is a central component of the basal RNA polymerase II transcription machinery, composed of mobile elements that move relative to each other. POLR2I/RPB9 is located in the upper jaw surrounding the central large cleft, where it is believed to bind the incoming DNA template.

POLR2I is also known as RPB9, hRPB14.5.
