PIK3C3

Description

The PIK3C3 (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase catalytic subunit type 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 18.

Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase catalytic subunit type 3 is an enzyme subunit that in humans is encoded by the PIK3C3 gene. It's a class III phosphoinositide 3-kinase.

PIK3C3 is a catalytic subunit of the PI3K complex that produces phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate. This enzyme is involved in numerous membrane trafficking processes, with different complex forms contributing to specific roles. PI3KC3-C1 is essential for initiating autophagosomes, while PI3KC3-C2 participates in both autophagosome maturation and endocytosis. PIK3C3-C1 also facilitates membrane curvature formation in the endoplasmic reticulum before vesicle budding. In addition, PIK3C3 plays a role in degradative endocytic trafficking and is crucial for the abscission step during cytokinesis, likely in the context of PI3KC3-C2. Further, PIK3C3 is involved in the transport of lysosomal enzyme precursors to lysosomes and is required for the movement of cargo from early to late endosomes.

PIK3C3 is also known as VPS34, Vps34, hVps34.
