PCYOX1

Description

The PCYOX1 (prenylcysteine oxidase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

PCYOX1 is a gene that encodes the enzyme prenylcysteine oxidase 1 in humans.

PCYOX1 encodes a prenylcysteine oxidase that breaks down prenylated proteins. This enzyme cleaves the thioether bond of prenyl-L-cysteines, including farnesylcysteine and geranylgeranylcysteine. It works only on free prenylcysteines, not those attached to proteins or peptides. PCYOX1 plays a key role in the final step of prenylated protein degradation, breaking down prenylcysteines after the protein has been degraded.

PCYOX1 is also known as PCL1.
