PCOLCE

Description

The PCOLCE (procollagen C-endopeptidase enhancer) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

PCOLCE encodes a glycoprotein that facilitates the enzymatic cleavage of type I procollagen. Fibrillar collagens, like types I-III, are initially synthesized as precursor molecules called procollagens, which contain N- and C-propeptides at their ends. PCOLCE binds to these procollagens and enhances the activity of the enzyme responsible for cleaving the propeptides, ultimately leading to the formation of mature, structured collagen fibrils.

PCOLCE binds to the C-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen and enhances the activity of procollagen C-proteinase, an enzyme that cleaves the propeptide.

PCOLCE is also known as PCPE, PCPE-1, PCPE1.
