The P2RX3 (purinergic receptor P2X 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.
P2RX3 is a gene that encodes a protein known as P2X3, a member of the purinoceptor family for ATP. This receptor acts as a ligand-gated ion channel, possibly involved in transmitting nociceptor (pain-sensing nerve) activation triggered by ATP. Studies on mice suggest P2X3 plays a key role in peripheral pain responses and other functions like controlling urinary bladder volume, platelet aggregation, macrophage activation, apoptosis, and neuron-glial interactions.
