SEC24C

Description

The SEC24C (SEC24 homolog C, COPII coat complex component) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.

SEC24C is a protein involved in vesicle trafficking, specifically as a member of the SEC24 subfamily within the SEC23/SEC24 family. It shares similarity with the yeast Sec24p component of COPII, the coat protein complex responsible for vesicle budding from the ER. SEC24C might contribute to vesicle shaping, cargo selection, and concentration. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.

SEC24C is a component of the COPII coat protein complex, which is essential for the formation of transport vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The COPII coat plays a crucial role in both physically shaping the ER membrane into vesicles and selecting specific cargo molecules for transport to the Golgi complex. SEC24C is a key player in cargo selection within the COPII complex, potentially having different cargo preferences compared to its close relatives SEC24A and SEC24B. It may specifically package GPI-anchored proteins through the cargo receptor TMED10 and also show specificity for cargos containing the IxM motif, such as the SNAREs GOSR2 and STX5.
