Description
The KNSTRN (kinetochore localized astrin (SPAG5) binding protein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.
KNSTRN is an essential component of the mitotic spindle, crucial for accurate chromosome separation and progression into anaphase. It facilitates the transition from metaphase to anaphase, ensuring proper chromosome alignment, timely sister chromatid separation, and maintaining spindle pole structure. The astrin (SPAG5)-kinastrin (SKAP) complex, which includes KNSTRN, promotes stable microtubule-kinetochore attachments. KNSTRN is vital for kinetochore oscillations and microtubule plus-end dynamics during live cell mitosis, potentially by linking spindle microtubule plus-ends to mitotic chromosomes, ultimately enabling precise cell division. KNSTRN's interaction with PRPF19 may suggest involvement in UV-induced apoptosis, however further evidence is required to confirm this.
