ETS1

Description

The ETS1 (ETS proto-oncogene 1, transcription factor) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

ETS1 is a gene that encodes a protein belonging to the ETS family of transcription factors. These factors bind to DNA through their winged-helix-turn-helix DNA binding motif, known as the Ets domain, which specifically recognizes DNA sequences containing a GGAA/T core element. While all ETS proteins share this domain, they differ in their preference for sequences flanking the GGAA/T core motif. For instance, the consensus sequence for ETS1 is PuCC/a-GGAA/T-GCPy. However, many natural ETS1-responsive GGAA/T elements deviate from this consensus, suggesting that other transcription factors might facilitate ETS1 binding to unfavorable DNA sequences. ChIP-Seq studies have shown that ETS1 can bind both AGGAAG and CGGAAG motifs. ETS1 binds to DNA as a monomer.

ETS1 acts as a transcription factor, directly regulating the expression of cytokine and chemokine genes across various cell types. It may also influence lymphoid cell differentiation, survival, and proliferation. Additionally, ETS1 potentially regulates angiogenesis by controlling the expression of genes involved in endothelial cell migration and invasion.

ETS1 is also known as ETS-1, EWSR2, c-ets-1, p54.
