OR8I2

Description

The OR8I2 (olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily I member 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

The OR8I2 gene encodes a protein called olfactory receptor 8I2. Olfactory receptors are responsible for detecting smells. They bind to odor molecules in the nose, triggering a neuronal response that lets us perceive smells. These receptors belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and have a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The naming of these receptors is independent of other organisms.

Odorant receptor.

OR8I2 is also known as OR11-170.
