OR6B1

Description

The OR6B1 (olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily B member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

The OR6B1 gene encodes for the Olfactory receptor 6B1 protein, which plays a crucial role in the sense of smell. This protein interacts with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response that leads to smell perception. Olfactory receptor proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and they are characterized by their 7-transmembrane domain structure, similar to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. These receptors are responsible for recognizing odorant signals and transducing them through G protein-mediated pathways. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and the nomenclature used for these genes and proteins is independent of other organisms.

Odorant receptor.

OR6B1 is also known as OR7-3, OR7-9.
