OR5K1
Description
The OR5K1 (olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily K member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.
Olfactory receptor 5K1 is a protein encoded by the OR5K1 gene in humans. It plays a crucial role in the sense of smell by interacting with odorant molecules in the nose, triggering a neuronal response that leads to the perception of a smell. Olfactory receptors are part of a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), each arising from a single coding-exon gene. Like many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, they share a 7-transmembrane domain structure and are responsible for recognizing and transducing odorant signals through G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome and its nomenclature is independent of other organisms.
