OR5I1

Description

The OR5I1 (olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily I member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

The OR5I1 gene encodes a protein called olfactory receptor 5I1. This protein is involved in the sense of smell, working by interacting with odorant molecules in the nose. This interaction triggers a signal that leads to the perception of a smell. Olfactory receptors belong to a large group of proteins called G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). These receptors have a common structure with seven transmembrane domains, similar to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. The OR5I1 gene is part of the olfactory receptor gene family, which is the largest gene family in the human genome. The naming system for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is unique to humans and differs from other organisms.

Odorant receptor.

OR5I1 is also known as HSOlf1, OLF1.
