OR5AK2

Description

The OR5AK2 (olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily AK member 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

The OR5AK2 gene encodes the olfactory receptor 5AK2 protein in humans. Olfactory receptors are responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell. These receptors are part of a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), each encoded by a single exon gene. They share a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure with other receptors, facilitating the recognition and transduction of odorant signals through G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is independent of other organisms.
