OR2V2
Description
The OR2V2 (olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily V member 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.
The OR2V2 gene encodes a protein known as olfactory receptor 2V2. Olfactory receptors play a crucial role in smell perception. They interact with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response that ultimately leads to the sensation of smell. These receptors belong to a vast family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and share a common 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. This structure enables them to recognize and transduce odorant signals through G protein-mediated pathways. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature of these genes and proteins is specific to humans and is independent of other species.
