OR1C1
Description
The OR1C1 (olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily C member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
The OR1C1 gene encodes a protein called olfactory receptor 1C1. Olfactory receptors detect odorant molecules in the nose, triggering a nerve response that results in the perception of smell. These receptors belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), arising from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for recognizing and transducing odorant signals via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature assigned to the olfactory receptor genes and proteins for humans is independent of other organisms.
