OR1B1
Description
The OR1B1 (olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily B member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.
Olfactory receptor 1B1 is a protein encoded by the OR1B1 gene in humans. It is part of a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) involved in the sense of smell. These receptors interact with odor molecules in the nose, triggering a neuronal response that leads to smell perception. OR1B1, like many other olfactory receptors, has a 7-transmembrane domain structure similar to neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. It plays a crucial role in recognizing and transducing odorant signals through G protein-mediated pathways. As of 2024, no odorants have been identified that bind to OR1B1, making it an orphan receptor. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome.
