OR13A1
Description
The OR13A1 (olfactory receptor family 13 subfamily A member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.
The OR13A1 gene encodes for the Olfactory receptor 13A1 protein in humans. This protein interacts with odorant molecules in the nose, triggering a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell. Olfactory receptor proteins belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), arising from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. Olfactory receptors are responsible for recognizing and transducing odorant signals through G protein-mediated mechanisms. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is independent of other organisms.
