TIMP3

Description

The TIMP3 (TIMP metallopeptidase inhibitor 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 22.

Metalloproteinase inhibitor 3 is a protein encoded by the TIMP3 gene in humans. It belongs to the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases gene family, whose members are inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). MMPs are enzymes involved in breaking down the extracellular matrix (ECM). Expression of the TIMP3 gene is increased in response to cell growth signals, and the protein is found in the ECM. Mutations in this gene have been linked to Sorsby's fundus dystrophy, an inherited eye disorder.

TIMP3 is also known as HSMRK222, K222, K222TA2, SFD.
